Who's wrong in this situation? The b/f n me aren't doing so well!?

My b/f of four months failed to tell me he had to go out in the field.... he left me in the dark for almost three weeks (my phone calls weren't returned etc) so I umed the worst- that he was ending it w/ me. Sent him some angry/hurt text messages as a result. Now he is back and we are "up in the air..." It was an honest mistake on my part my actions were admittedly childish and inexcusable .... but he DIDN'T MENTION IT TO me until he got back three weeks not knowing what the hell was going on and crying my eyes out !!!! Shouldn't he have shared this information with me? Isn't that what people who are in relationships do?!
