Should I use overdrive while I drive?

I drive a 2002 Kia Rio which automatically runs in overdrive unless I press a on which turns it off. Because it uses more gas when I use overdrive I got in the habit of turning it off. Is this hurting my car or can it run smoothly without overdrive?
